Entry #8. Attentive Driving

One thing I have noticed in my 4 years behind the wheel is, how un-attentive people are while driving.  I take the freeway to work nearly every day, and every day I see people on their phones.

Driving is too dangerous of a task to do while being distracted.  Distractions in a car can easily lead to the death of an entire family, breaking the hearts of dozens.  Being apart of the next wave of adults, we have to take affirmative actions to not be selfish and not be distracted while driving.

Whether it be phones, food, makeup, we must stay focused on the road.  Too easily can accidents happen if we are not being attentive.

One idea I came up with, with a friend was the idea of phones shutting off at a certain speed.  For example,  at any speed above 5 MPH phones should instantly lock.  This would ensure they couldn't be used on surface streets, highways, even neighborhoods.  At stoplights they would unlock and once the car starts moving they would lock again.  This wouldn't fix the problem entirely but it would definitely get us out ahead of it.

Having your phone ready at a moments notice is no doubt very important, but they're too dangerous to have while driving cars.  Emergencies can happen and you may need to use your phone while driving, but whether it be highways or surface streets, there is always somewhere to pullover.  As an entire generation we need to do the part of helping others and not being selfish.  This is how we lead to being a happier more prosperous nation, and the courtesy of paying attention while peoples lives are at risk, is a start.
