So far, 18 years into this whole life thing, the most consistent part has been school. I've been in school since I was 3 and I have not stopped powering through ever since. I love school, interacting with others, expanding my knowledge more on topics that are necessary in life. If it weren't for school, I wouldn't be fluent in English, I wouldn't know any higher level math, and I'd barely know about the history of our world.
While all these things are great and so important, what's been consistent with school is homework. Now homework, is what takes away from school. It's kind of how like when you are forced to read books for a class it isn't fun, but when you read on your own accord it is. For me, school is awesome I love learning, but man do I hate being forced to do homework for a grade.
While it's more understandable in lower level schooling like high school and grade school, homework at the college level shouldn't be mandatory. I feel so much of college is already learning on our own time, why be forced to do homework for a grade. College is a choice, so students should have the choice of if they want to do course work outside of the class room. I believe that performance on quizzes and tests shows a students knowledge more than homework.
Allowing homework to be optional will give students the choice of doing things on their own time and choosing their success in class. While I'm more than sure doing homework equates to better knowledge on a topic, it should be up to the person to go out of their way to become more skilled.
College is a choice. Homework along with it should be as well.
Hi Ali! I completely agree with this blog. I have one class currently that only cares about the tests and I have always wondered why I like it the best. I can spend as little or as much time i want on the material. The only thing that matters is the quizzes. It seems to work better for me personally. On the last 7 quizzes I have gotten 100% and sometimes over!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you, partially, lol. For some classes I would say definitely homework should be optional because it is just tedious and busy work. However, classes like math and chemistry require practice and a lot of repetition to really understand the topic that is being taught and it is more of an knowledge thing, if you are working on an assignment and realize you are stuck on it, you can get the help you need than if you were only required to take an exam and then you realize you don't know how to do anything. I do agree with you that it is the student's responsibility to be in charge of their education, there are just so many what ifs and different sides to the spectrum. Most of my teachers right now don't assign homework except for the chemistry class I am in because it helps with that retention. I feel like in a higher level education more commitment is expected of you which is why they assign homework. I really enjoyed your analysis of it though good job!
