Immediately, when I saw we'd be doing blogs for this class I was skeptical. Looking at it, it's just a class assignment that I have to do if I want to pass. Of course to me, this just means doing it and getting a good grade.
I'd put Business Insider as my first choice just because I love how easy their entries are to read. In addition to formatting and organization, their content is extremely important to what is going on in today's world. I am also very fond due to how easy it is to read their articles. Not easy in the sense of content, easy in the sense that it is just so clear. The fonts are always very easy to read, the formatting of all the paragraphs and references are very easy to follow along with. They give good insight on things going on with the government, stock market, even with national news.
That exact mindset is something I am attempting to stray away from in college. So, I took a different approach to this assignment after some thinking. This project is going to be my opportunity to change the mindset I have for my future assignments in the rest of my college life. My newfound motivation is coming from reading different blogs.
Blogs can be extremely powerful due to the messages they can convey to their audience. Some of the most major "News" we see on social media is coming from a type of blog.

Huffington Post is a strong second due to their content and presentation. They have entries on interesting topics while still giving good attention to the world's news. The formatting and appearance is always very clear cut and professional. While the content of the entries can go in many different directions. It has a wide range of blog-types, opening up more room for creativity and inspiration. I feel using a lot of these blogs as a guide throughout the semester will help me build a clear and concise blog.
The blog I'd say I dislike the MOST is Perez Hilton. Clicking on it, their landing page already makes me sick. In your face colors, really jarring animations, topics that have no substance. Perez Hilton blogs feed off of the social media culture we live in and I hate every bit of it. The fact they have a section just for "Kanye West" and "Taylor Swift" gets my blood boiling. For example, this is an article about Miley Cyrus moving in with some girl. WHO CARES??? It is something I'll never understand. And all in all, formatting, content, organization... it's all just terrible to me.
I understand that Huffington Post is also guilty of having a lot on celebrities and social media, but at least they have content which is important for the world to see. When someone goes to a Huffington Post entry about a pop-culture figure, on the side bar they'll be able to at least see something which has to do with the real issues going on in today'd world. Perez Hilton on the other hand is just more non-sense on the side and to me that just makes it 10 times worse. Blogs can be a powerful learning tool for one seeking more knowledge, but with the way society puts such a high value social media it hinders that learning.

I'm glad you are challenging yourself to shift your initial mindset regarding this project! This is a well organized post and you're off to a good start!
ReplyDeleteAli, I would like to being by acknowledging how relatable your blog came across! Immediately as I began reading, I was able to connect with how you described your thoughts on blog posts. I, too, found it easy to view this assignment as just another thing to complete in order to get an A. However, as I continued reading about your interests, I was pleasantly surprised that I was interested in similar things. I like how you mentioned the Huffington Post as being one of your top choices. I agree with your reasoning for liking the particular layout that the Huffington Post offers. I typically find articles more intriguing when they are presented to me in a clear, professional, and consice manner. Likewise, I also agree with your dislike of choice being Perez Hilton. I do not care either! I would prefer to not be involved with celebrity news and what I consider meaningless drama!
